This picturesque, idyllic village of Moorish origins is situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra Tejeda mountains at 575 metres above sea level and from where you have a panoramic view over green valleys, towering mountains, white washed villages and the Mediterranean . The village is a short stroll or a four minute drive from Competa .
The village's Arabic name meant “The White One”, and its origins can be traced back to the 13th century. The layout of the streets, squares, and whitewashed houses reflects its Islamic past as does the use of terraces for cultivation of grapes, olives and tropical fruits.
The main square of Canillas de Albaida is dominated by the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la Expectacion, however, you will also find the two shrines of Santa Ana and San Anton, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries respectively.
Many foreigners have chosen to take up residence in and around this beautiful village settled right up to the huge Sierra Tejeda and Almijara Nature Reserve. This is an area dominated by vineyards, almond and olive groves as well as many irrigated fields where avocados and mangos thrive in the warm Andalucian sun. A healthy population of eagles, vultures, wild boars and mountain goats thrive in the mountains.
While centrally located with a population of approximately 2000, this is a nature lover's dream, and the village is situated only an hour's drive from Malaga Airport and approximately thirty minutes away from the coast.
